Hilary Hansen was five when she fell unconscious in her Coronado kindergarten class in October 1997.
Physicians at a local hospital thought she had low blood sugar and sent her home. When Hilary began having numerous seizures, however, her mother, Debbie, knew something was very wrong.
Debbie brought her daughter to the Sam S. and Rose Stein Emergency Care Center at Rady Children's Hospital-San Diego. MORE

Patrick Ivison
It all happened in an instant: 14-month-old Patrick Ivison – just learning how to walk – was with his mom when a car backed up suddenly, pinning the little boy under the wheel. Now 18, Patrick is a quadriplegic – and an inspiration to everyone he meets. He is an engaging young man heading off to college in the fall. He lives life to its fullest, and he made a promise to give back to the Hospital that saved his life. MORE
