On August 13th 2010, Carson Berg was born premature. A combination of underdeveloped lungs and a severe infection caused Carson to become very ill requiring hospitalization in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Rady Children's Hospital-San Diego. During his stay in the NICU, parents Jessica and Derek Berg were able to witness miracles: Carson's desire for life, the miracle of prayer and modern, well-trained and compassionate medical care at Rady Children's.
For Carson's first birthday, Jessica and Derek decided to host a fundraiser they named Carson’s Trike & Bike. This race for small children is a way to honor their son and to tangibly express their gratitude to Rady Children’s’ Hospital. They wanted to make sure that other babies could get the same extraordinary care that they experienced.
In the Berg’s first year of hosting the event over $12,000 was raised! This is a huge accomplishment considering that Jessica and Derek only had 2 months to plan the event and recruit participants, sponsors, and donors. Jessica and Derek worked hard reaching out to community partners, friends and family to get support. Jessica worked with Rady Children’s Hospital Foundation to learn about fundraising and sponsorship; then turned around and recruited over 15 sponsors for the event. The Berg family also created an online event page with the help of Rady Children’s Hospital to help participants fundraise and to provide event registration.
