Ten Years of Hope and Healing
Team Liam continues to make strides in the Carlsbad 5000.
Every year, Team Liam participates in the Carlsbad 5000, including hosting a Pasta Party and Pre-Race Celebration the day before the race for all the Team Liam participants.
The run is a great time, but the real strides that Team Liam makes is in its support of the neurosurgical services program at Rady Children’s Hospital-San Diego. The group -- comprised of families and friends of Rady Children’s neurosurgical patients – raises funds for Liam’s Fund for Neurosurgery, which buys neurosurgical equipment for Rady Children’s.
Who is Liam?
Liam's Fund is named for Liam Gutierrez, who was born with Hydrocephalus on November 10, 1998. During his first month of life, Liam had more than 20 brain surgeries. By the age of 18 months, Liam has had more than 75 brain surgeries. That averaged to about four brain surgeries a month for a child who wasn't even 2 years old! Liam's parent's and doctors and everyone at Rady Children's knew that Liam was a very special child.
Because of his unique situation, Liam's parents and doctors joined together to research and find ways of helping Liam, other children with Hydrocephalus and any child needing brain surgery. This grassroots group has raised more than $260,000 through car washes, bake sales, garage sales, Shamu & You Family Walk teams, their Miracle Makers fundraising campaign and their team at the Carlsbad 5000.
These funds have purchased many pieces of state-of-the-art neurosurgical equipment, including, the TrueVision Microsurgery System, a Codman Irrigating Bipoloar Generator, an Alfa Infra-Red attachment, a Sugita Surgical Head Holder, a Mayfield Triad Skull Clamp, Pituitary Surgical Instrumentation, Micro Bi-polar forceps, an Irrigating Bi-polar system, a Layla Retractor Table Mount, Kerrison Rongeurs, Keyhole Bi-polar forceps and Aneurysm Clips.
In August 2010, Rady Children’s was pleased to recognize Team Liam’s efforts by naming Operating Suite #2 in the new Acute Care Pavilion the Liam’s Fund for Neurosurgery Operating Suite.
This dynamic group of Miracle Makers is looking forward to their next 10 years of fundraising so they can continue fund equipment that will give children with neurosurgical needs the best chance for a healthy future.
