Friends of Scott is a non-profit organization that was founded in memory of Scott Delgadillo, who lost his life to childhood cancer 10 years ago. The Friends of Scott Foundation's mission is to help children with cancer and their families by providing the emotional and financial support needed to cope with this devastating disease.
Friends of Scott has been a partner of Rady Children’s Hospital-San Diego since 2005. They provide support to Rady Children’s patients and families through programs such as Ready to Read, in which volunteers read stories to our young cancer patients, and Café Con Leche, a parent support group that provides coffee and pastries to moms and dads in the hematology/oncology unit. Additionally, the Foundation provides scholarships for young adults wishing to continue their education. They even provide pajamas for our patients.
In 2005, Friends of Scott partnered with Rady Children’s teen support group – “Some of My Best Friends are Bald (SOMFAB)” – to host an annual prom themed “Unforgettable,” which has become their signature event. Friends of Scott coordinates a formal dress and tuxedo drive to ensure that all patients have formal attire, and provides limousines to transport them to the Hall of Champions in Balboa Park. The night starts off with the “red-carpet” experience, complete with photographers taking their pictures and local reporters conducting interviews. The night continues with entertainment, a buffet-style dinner and dancing. On this “Unforgettable” night, these young men and women can forget about their fear and pain, and just be teenagers.
Throughout the year, Friends of Scott offers many events for Rady Children’s patients, including Scotty D Bowling Night, Build-A-Bear Day, roller skating, Boomers Outing, movie night, Knott’s Scary Farm, Chargers games and the Celebrity Golf Classic hosted by Drew Brees.
Most recently, Friends of Scott honored Scott and his legacy by making gifts benefiting the Peckham Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders at our new Acute Care Pavilion. To thank them for their generosity, the new Wellness Center and Bone Marrow Transplant Playroom have been named in their honor.
Rady Children’s is proud to partner with Friends of Scott, and awarded their organization with the 2010 Outstanding Community Miracle Maker Honor.
