Rady Children's honors and thanks Audrey Eller, ConKerr Cancer-San Diego and Optimist Clubs for working with local businesses and community groups to create and deliver more than 10,000 fun and colorful pillowcases to our patients.
This wonderful program began in 2002 when 12-year-old Ryan Kerr was diagnosed with a rare bone cancer. His mom, Cindy, got approval from the hospital and made a cheerful pillowcase to brighten his room. Soon, all the children in the oncology ward wanted pillowcases of their own!
In February 2008, sadly, Ryan lost his battle with cancer, but Cindy continued the "pillowcase legacy" to honor her son. More than 160,000 pillowcases have been delivered to hospitals in the United States, Canada and South Africa.
The special themed pillowcases help provide a little extra comfort and joy to the patients at Rady Children's.
