DS Action, a 501(c)(3) non-profit, grass roots organization, investigates and implements solutions to enhance the lives of persons with Down syndrome. In 2007, DS Action was founded by parents, caregivers, medical professionals, educators and business professionals. DS Action’s operations are completely managed and supported by volunteers, including their Board of Directors and Professional Advisory Board.
When this community based group initially came together, they determined that many individuals with Down syndrome were not receiving the same level of recommended medical and developmental care. Also, parents/caregivers often found it difficult to get referrals to a variety of available intervention services. In order to meet these needs, the team worked to establish a Down Syndrome Center. The goal was to have a central location where all individuals with Down syndrome would have an equal opportunity of receiving recommended evaluations, referrals and intervention services.
As a result, DS Action partnered with Rady Children’s Hospital-San Diego to establish the only Down Syndrome Center in Southern California. Since January 2008, the Center’s team of medical specialists has benefitted children with Down syndrome and their families by offering some of the following services: implementation of AAP guidelines, multidisciplinary assessment, genetic counseling, comprehensive case management, patient advocacy, social services and connecting families to existing community agencies for educational and therapeutic interventions. The Down Syndrome Center at Rady Children’s improves the consistency of care for children with Down syndrome, serves as a resource to other medical professionals and strengthens the social network for families.
On January 15, 2013, the Down Syndrome Center will celebrate its 5-year anniversary. Since its inception, more than 700 children, aged birth to five years, have been seen at the Center on the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of each month. Due to the strong demand for the comprehensive care that the Center provides, appointment wait times have steadily increased over the years with the current wait time at almost eight months.
DS Action is committed to raising the necessary funds to ensure that the Down Syndrome Center continues to provide each child with the individual care and attention that they deserve, as well as the opportunity for each child to achieve their full potential. They also want to do even more by increasing the number of clinics each year (which will significantly reduce the appointment wait list time) and by offering appointments to children over the age of five.
