“In 1996 I had been active in the Helix Auxiliary Unit of Rady Children’s for 30 years. It seemed the right time to support Rady Children’s in a different way. I wrote to the other members and invited them to my home for lunch on the third Thursday in October. Since that was the day of each month our unit had always met, we decided to continue the tradition, but as Miracle Makers. We either go out to lunch or gather in one of our homes. HUGS was the name we gave our group.
“Now after more than 10 years, we are still gathering. We each pay $25 in annual dues. Lunch costs $20 each if we go to a restaurant, or $10 if we meet in one of our homes. HUGS has a summer party and a winter holiday party which have become mini-fundraisers. We have designated our funds to help the Rainbow Room in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and the Family Violence Program. We cherish our friendships and take pride in our continued support of Rady Children’s.”
