The La Playa Unit was formed in 1954, and five of the ladies chartering our Unit are still members! One of our Life Active members just celebrated her 100th birthday, but we often have a new baby at a meeting, too. Generally, we meet in Point Loma homes unless there is a special event, like our June tea.
Originally, we were known as the “Green Thumb Girlies” because many of our early fundraising efforts had a garden theme. In May 1996, we held our first Celebration of Champions fundraising event (www.celebrationofchampions.net), a Special Olympics-style run in which Rady Children’s cancer patients, survivors and bereaved families participate. During the last 14 years, we have raised more than $5 million to support patient programs of the Peckham Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders.
We meet the third Friday of every month.
